Hiring the wrong new york magician is the worst thing you can do for your kids party. Many parents would disagree, saying that hiring a merely competent or even subpar magician would not be that big of a problem, but that is an error, and here is why; the first step in hiring the magician is the hiring itself. The second is telling your kids that you are having a magician in the first place. Here is where you begin to have trouble if you have not hired the right magician; expectations. These kids are now not expecting a “competent” magician, a “par” magician, they are expecting wonder and excitement! They are expecting the same magician that drove their friends to tell them, with bated breath, about the amazing magic tricks they saw at the last party they attended! In short, it has to be good, not just so-so.
Now, if your magician shows up late, drunk or not at all, you have an even bigger problem. Even if he or she shows up, if they are not good with kids or don’t deal with kids all the time, their skills in doing magic tricks won’t matter nearly as much. They will be negated by the fact that the kids don’t “get” them, and vice versa. What the magician does has to be accessible to the children watching the magic show, otherwise rent a bounce house.
Make sure your magician deals with kids regularly, and in fact, I would not hire a magician for my kids birthday party that was anything but a kids magician. If he splits his time between adult gigs and kids parties, he won’t be doing magic tricks at my kids party. That is a critical element. He also needs to be doing this full-time. If he is painting houses the rest of the time, he is the wrong magician for me. He needs to be spending all of his time honing the craft of magic to be effective, and he needs to be a good enough magician for it to pay his bills.
